Tyler's Taproom Blogging : Now With Cod

Shortly before the Triangle Tweetup last Thursday night, I had a spontaneous dinner at Tyler's Taproom with @boraZ. Eating was rushed, because I was tweeting, talking and we were both looking for other people we knew or who just looked as if they might be going to the Tweetup. Bora ordered the blackened salmon salad.

As you can see, he was very eager to eat it. He finished it too! It must have been good.

I had the fish and chips. They've replaced the catfish with cod, which they announced in a separate page inserted in the menu. They said this was due to popular demand and I'm not terribly fond of catfish, so I naturally think this was a good move. I actually thought their fish and chips was quite good before, in spite of the type of fish, but this was even better. It was nice and crispy and they give you three big pieces accompanied by their garlic fries, which are great. Two of the pieces made a nice lunch on Saturday and no reheating was required.

I also do love drinking at Tyler's. Their lemonade is still fantastic. It's so sour. It's perfect. It's really what keeps me going back again and again. I admit that I am powerless over good lemonade. That's the first step.

Tyler's Tuna Melt

I recently had a very good sandwich for lunch at Tyler's. It was a tuna melt that contained cranberries, apples and celery, on toasted sourdough bread. I ordered it with their garlic fries and was very pleased. I didn't even have any of their fantastically sour lemonade, because I'd stopped at Starbuck's earlier, but I'll have to get more of that soon.

Did you know that they serve brunch on Sundays? They do, from 10am to 3pm.

Durham Bloggers and SCONCs at Tyler's

Tonight was the BlogTogether meetup for Durham Bloggers, which was combined with the meetup for the Science Communicatiors of North Carolina. Durham Blogger meetups are normally held at Tyler's on the second Tuesday of almost every month, at 6pm.

It was fun talking with everyone. Abel Pharmboy's daughter was very patient with us, too. BrianR (not pictured), told us all about Carrboro Coworking, which will provide freelancers and others who are currently not satisfied with the isolation of working from home with a pleasant office environment. If I heard correctly, free coffee will even be included!

When I'm not desperately in need of caffeine, I always get the fresh-squeezed lemonade at Tyler's, because it's just incredibly good and incredibly sour. I love it. I decided I really wanted to have some fish and chips, so I ordered that, even though it was catfish and I tend not to like catfish. It's just too greasy, but I'm always ordering things I don't like and don't seem to regret it as often as one would expect. I was pleasantly surprised to find that their catfish was nice and crispy and this was definitely the best meal that I've had at Tyler's so far. It was served very hot, so that helped. It came with a ton of garlicky fries, which were also great.

Fun at the American Tobacco Campus

This afternoon my department had the equivalent of our holiday party, because we never seem to have time in the vicinity of the actual winter holidays.
We went over to Tyler's Taproom where we had a small room reserved. We enjoyed a variety of chips, dips and wings. I was pleased to confirm that the honey-jalapeno wings are not nearly as hot as their "2 beer hot" wings. The most exciting thing that happened was that Google Earth Evangelist was ordering a Duck-Rabbit Milk Stout and the bar sent her a sampling of four different stouts that they thought she should try. There was a creme brulee one that everyone thought was particularly awful and the Duck-Rabbit was voted best by all. Duck-Rabbit is brewed in Farmville, NC, which is very close to Greenville.

I go over to the American Tobacco Campus, where Tyler's is located, about once a week for meetings, but I'm usually in a rush. As we were leaving today, I decided to take a few photographs. ATC has this man-made "river" flowing throughout the campus which had to be shut down to reduce water loss due to evaporation during the drought. There still has to be some sort of power trip associated with turning off a river.

The person ahead of us in line for the parking deck elevator needed to go to the sixth floor, so I managed to get this shot in while she was getting out.

I've been meaning to take a photograph of this for a long time. If you look closely at the metal handicapped sign, you will notice that it's van accessible. I was actually there the day that they got carried away while painting.
